Cingular: Nokia Announces New UMTS Phones

Nokia yesterday announced their new Nseries line of extremely high-end Series 60 phones. The highest end of this class announced, the N91, will include a 4 GB hard drive, and will support UMTS (as well as EDGE, making Nseries the first U.S. phones to support both UMTS and EDGE). The announcement of the Nseries is the first time any phone supporting American UMTS frequencies has been announced since the release of UMTS in the middle of last year (on AT&T; Wireless).
This announcement will also give insight into Cingular's future UMTS plans. Nokia plans to offer the N91 in the U.S., and the only carrier supporting UMTS before 2007 is Cingular. The key here is that the N91 lacks HSDPA, which shows that Cingular may break from previous plans to wait and launch both UMTS and HSDPA at the same time.
