Feature Poll: Carrier Ads
Written by Christopher Price

We don't like YouTube. It has nothing to do that it's now owned by Google, or that people are using it as a verb, or even that news constantly references it as "the popular web site YouTube" as if the domain name was ThePopularWebSiteYouTube.com

We don't like it because it uses Flash FLV. The problem with FLV is that its lossy and about as low-quality as you can get. We love HD video, H.264, and all things MPEG.

So, we were thinking it would be a good idea to put a place to park TV ads. It's not hard for us to do, but we would like to get some feedback on if you would actually use it. So please, vote in our poll.

We've updated our comments system, this should fix most issues people were having with it. Specifically, some cookie-based issues were fixed and RSS feeds for comments are now working.

Our New Name: Launch Date
Written by Christopher Price
Sunday, 12 November 2006
Our new name for PCS Intel will be launched on December 23. Now, we did promise this would be a change in name only (and we've been putting it in bold each time to remind everyone). However, there will be quite a few enhancements we'll be rolling out to existing portions of PCS Intel. So, while things will be business as usual, there certainly will be plenty of new presents just in time for Christmas.

The hardest part is going to be not pulling the trigger early...

Coffee Anyone? Crashing Down...

Sprint PCS Info's database was damaged this evening, we restored it with a backup. The cause? Some test code we were running went really, really bad.

The good news is, we test code on our blog and not our main site's server. This means that only a couple of blog posts were lost, and we have re-posted anything relevant.

So what code were we testing? Some add-ons to Joomla 1.5 in preparation for the future migration to that code-base from the existing Joomla 1.0. Now, when will Apple make Time Machine for MySQL?

New Comments System
Written by Christopher Price
Monday, 06 November 2006
We're rolling out a new comment system later tonight (hopefully). The good news is, no more Discuss In Our Forums links. You'll be able to comment right on the news article. We'll see how it goes with the new system, and of course, take your feedback... and tweak it some more.

Update: Everything is online on both PCS Intel and Sprint PCS Info. On Sprint PCS Info, you do not need to register to comment.

Oh No, Not Again...

We are planning to change the name of PCS Intel. This really started back when we broke Sprint's plans for WiMax... which was just months after we started PCS Intel. PCS just doesn't fit in anymore, and only causes confusion (much like when we broke Verizon news on Sprint PCS Info).

We know these changes cause headaches, and we don't take them lightly. However, we do promise a seamless transition to our new site. This means all your old links will work. It means you won't have to lift a finger, and feeds will keep being delivered. This really will be a change in name only.

Of course, we will encourage you to update your links, but that is only to ease the transition on search engines.

So, what will the new name be? Well, we don't know yet. We have a poll running right now, so please let us know. I personally favor the more-complete Wireless Factor, but we can't decide... so please decide for us.

Offer to Sprint: Let us Handle RSS
Written by Christopher Price
Friday, 03 November 2006
Sprint, we know you're trying. To compete with PCS Intel's influence, you rolled out a blog. It failed. You rolled out a podcast... it's pretty much failed. You rolled out RSS for your products and business offers. They haven't been updated since April.

So, for the low price of saving your company from appearing to be completely incompetent, let us handle the RSS for Sprint.com... at least the web team can look good at doing something compared to the competition.

And, in case you don't recall... the last time Sprint's web team updated their RSS feeds was when we told them how out of date they were. Guess when that was? April... the last time they updated them.

Moral of the story: Don't roll out features you don't plan to support.

There's a Million Club?
Written by Christopher Price

As you know, I rarely blog about other bloggers. But, the CEO of Weblogs Inc., Jason Calacanis, constantly makes a point of pointing out his blog success stories. A bellwether of his is when a Weblogs, Inc. site serves 1,000,000 pages a month or more.

PCS Intel has been in the Million Club for quite awhile now... but I do have to ask... do we get any perks for it? A more-accurate PageRank? Rewards points? Frequent flyer miles?

Turing Blue

As you may have noticed, all those green sponsored links have been replaced with blue ones. That's because we're now partnering with Kontera for sponsored links. There are a few bugs, but the good news is that sponsored links will now load faster and be less apparent.

And yes, you can still disable them if you want to ensure PCS Intel gets less money each month... just hover over one of them and click the "?" help button. Then click Disable at the bottom of the resulting page.

Submit News... Where?

We realize we haven't exactly made it easy over the past couple of months to send us news tips. But, fear not, we're hard at work on it. We wanted to create a system that didn't cause Asteroid-like problems for PCS Intel, and its sources. We are confident our new system will resolve that, and we think it's the best in the business.

But, it's a little ways off from prime-time, so please feel free to leverage the semi-anonmyous power of the forums until then.
